COLORS OF WONDER

Verwunderung erneuert dennoch Vieles.

Colors of Wonder, title of the new cd: what could it be besides the colors nature is bestowing us with in order to let us wonder agape?
Probably all the colors passing by behind the eyes when complex and chromatic ensembles replace each other like layers, in form of sculptures, paintings, mosaics or installations, made out of leather, stone, wood, plastic, metal, fabric etc.?
This permanent change of inner art work, a fountain of youth for the phantasy, triggers off wonder in any case, astonishment, as well as the resulting perception of what one is apparently made of.*

*Or you grope blindly along a wall and visualize in detail the hallway for you know it since it´s in your own appartment. And you wonder about the manifold shades of gray offered by the inner image. And you ask yourself: why isn´t it colored?

This is all pure and therefore without delay, except for a few stray sticks of tingler: a little double-headed rattle drum - two pellets, each attached to a cord, hang downwards and get skidded against the drumheads by quickly turning the axe -, a moroccan naqareh, a little xylophone and an even smaller balafon.
This accoustic splitting represents the inversion of a common pattern: here wonder is not an expression of excitement but rather pegged to a non-decreasing intensity. Therefore it´s colors are perhaps just the Beckett-like gradations of grey.

Nevertheless wonder refaces a lot of things. And something new can in turn lead to wonder.
Astonishment liberates, it´s free of thoughts and memory, the comparison: »but this reminds me of…« already is second-hand goods.
In any case the not-knowing fluoresces and appears in different colors.

But Colors of Wonder also means, at least for me as passionate reader, all the facets of wonder literature is presenting and delighting us with, the wonder about how refined phantasy characters of different eras are woven together, inherited in permanent changing forms from writer to writer; the wonder about these dazzling coincidences you bump into as attentive reader.

During this peregrination with an open mouth on the large field of mediation of literature in literature in literature… I encountered Proust again  - although I had thought that I left him behind a few years ago for the rest of my life. He showed up in form of a small book, discovered by chance, about his library, a long essay which tries to figure out which of his characters he clothes with which writer and how he classifies them all that way into good and bad readers etc.. When my curiosity was roused - eventhough this essay is partly quite coarse meshed woven -, I resorted again to the masters own essay about this topic, Days of Reading, and finally I once again got to Balzac, just to learn on one hand, how the gay baron Charlus, a main character of the Recherche is carved out of a main Balzac character, and on the other hand, why this baron preferred certain characters and novelettes in the Balzac cosmos.

And at the same time the young Hemingway crossed my way again - the reasons, left open here, form another chain of wonder -, and surprised I asked myself how two writers can be so far away from each other - one of them in the middle of the descending world of high nobility, the other one in the middle of »modern« life including the wounds of the First World War -, eventhough they live in Paris at the same time.

Or you just follow zen master Boshan Wuyi (1575 - 1630) who considered it being indispensable to morph into one single compact mass of wonder while meditating: >Your whole being, inside and out, is just one single mass of wondering…

The key to meditation is the commitment not to stop until the mass of wonderment breaks.<
Perhaps everything dissolves into colors then.

The photos at least all come from my immediate environment, the appartment, including the ones for the cover.

Besides it´s just the first part of the cd, the second one deals with words.
